Multicard release threatens operators business model

One of the biggest disadvantages in the world of Digital Pay TV is the fact that the subscriber can only watch the content he paid for on one TV.
Many operators have solved this problem by issuing several smartcards to the same household – often at a large discount. Some operators has seen this business as an welcome opportunity for an extra income and most CA providers has supported this business because they of course wants to sell as many of their cards as possible.

Operators risk multiple million claims from copyright holders

But it is a very dangerous and risky business for the operator. No one can guarantee that the extra smartcards are used in the household who holds the real subscription. Depending on the platform, these cards could easily be used in the other end of the country and for satellite, even in another country.

Eleven Smartcards in one household!

We have heard of samples where up to eleven (11) cards are issued to the same household – and ten (10) of the smartcards was issues at a monthly fee as low as six (6) Euros or nine (9) USD each.
It must be obvious to anyone in the industry that this is not possible if the copyright holder for e.g. a movie channel is paid for the content.
